Bug fixes:
- Fixed view style glitch in info view used for Markdown, Word Types, and Word Usage actions.
- Fixed a text-to-speech behavior bug: Speech is now stopped when closing the document being spoken.
Version 3.0
New features:
- Added support for the remote control of the text-to-speech via the earphones buttons:
- To play or pause the text-to-speech, tap the center button.
- To skip to the next sentence, double-tap the center button.
- To skip to the previous paragraph, triple-tap the center button.
- Added Use Remote Control option to Settings. This enables the app for using the remote control on the earphones.
- The function keys on the keyboard may be used for controlling text-to-speech in a similar way: Play/Pause, Previous Track goes to the previous paragraph, and Next Track goes to the next sentence.
- Improved the speech controls popup view with icon buttons for Stop, Play/Pause, Previous and Next. The Previous button restarts speaking from the previous paragraph. The Next button skips to the next sentence.
Improved speech visualizer and text-to-speech behavior and fixed glitches.
- When stopping the speech, the selection is set to the end of the segment that was speaking. This makes it easy to enter text there if you stop the speech.
- Typing in the text view during speech will stop the speech.
- Making selections and using the Copy command will not stop the speech.
- Special characters of numeric digits in circles are now spoken as words in parenthesis, such as as "(circle two)".
- Fixed Auto-select language bug for users running macOS El Capitan 10.11.x and Sierra 10.12.
- TelepaText improves text-to-speech with several customizable options for text-to-speech behavior, making it very useful for listening to educational and other material. Students and researchers will find these text-to-speech enhancements useful for studying. Text-to-speech lets one listen to text documents while doing other tasks. These text-to-speech enhancements are included in both the macOS and iOS versions of TelepaText.
Other additions:
- Markdown, Word Types and Word Usage actions are all now available in the toolbar.
- Choose Customize Toolbar in the View menu to set your toolbar preferences.
- Reminder: Show and hide the toolbar with Command Option T.
- New option in Settings: Use background texture. The background texture (a subtle gray paper texture) can be turned on and off. The related Display Style action in the Actions view toggles between dark and light styles.
- Several of these options are also included in the recent TelepaText app update for iOS.
- This version supports macOS 10.12.2 Sierra and later. Imaja will release another minor update to support earlier macOS 10.9 Mavericks or later, but without support for the earphones remote control function for text-to-speech. Be sure to update to the version that suits your configuration.
Version 2.4.3
Speech visualizer and other interface improvements and bug fixes.
- The TelepaText speech visualizer for text-to-speech is improved with smarter behavior.
- Text is highlighted as it is spoken, and the text insertion point (selection) is moved to the end of each text segment as it is spoken. (The speech visualizer highlight is not a selection.)
- Stopping and restarting the speech continues from the same region in the document.
- Stopping during a segment leaves the insertion point right after the segment so one can start adding text via the keyboard or dictation.
- The Speak action starts at the current insertion point, or speaks the current selection.
- Text-to-speech will stop if one starts typing into the document.
- These improvements allow one to quickly move through a document switching between text-to-speech and writing modes in the same region.
- Recap of Keyboard shortcuts for speech:
- Speak : Shift-Command ⇧⌘ K
- Pause Speaking : Option-Command ⌥⌘ K
- Stop Speaking : Command ⌘ K
- Improved layout of Settings view with two columns.

Version 2.4
TelepaText adds a new visualizer for text-to-speech and new speech commands!
- In the new TelepaText speech visualizer, text sentences or paragraphs are selected as they are spoken. This works well for visually following the speech, with less frequent updates than flashing each word. Use the Settings view to configure speech behavior options such as Sentence Pause and Post-utterance Delay. If one makes a manual selection during speech, the speech visualizer will be stopped. The iOS version of TelepaText for iPhone and iPad also adds the speech visualizer.
We listen to a lot of awesome Wikipedia pages, so this is quite helpful. The Sentence pause feature is essential for controlling the pace of the speech, where a longer pause may be generally desirable for listening to and comprehending educational or technical content. This extra pause after each sentence gives the listener more time to process and comprehend each sentence, particularly useful in listening to complex, dense material.
- Refined the Markdown internal CSS style with a better size range on headers and tighter spacing. The size of the Markdown body text is matched to the current size of the document's editing view.
- New option in TelepaText Settings: Show item info in directory. This option controls display of document modified date and size. Simplify the directory views by turning this option off.
- New speech commands: **
- Speak all text
- [ Show | display | get ] markdown
- Bug fix: The Sentence Pause option for text-to-speech did not work if there was a Wikipedia-type footnote that was being muted.
- Fixed tooltips for toolbar buttons in the document window. Tooltips show the name of the button and the keyboard shortcut.
- Minor bug fixes.
** Speech commands are an In-App Purchase that let one control the TelepaText app with speech commands for various actions.
Version 2.3.1
New text-to-speech and language/voice options in TelepaText > Settings:
- Mute footnote numbers -- This option will mute footnote numbers such as '[1]' in text-to-speech -- helpful when listening to text such as Wikipedia articles. This also mutes other items such as ISBN and doi numbers that do not need to be spoken.
- Auto-select voice for language -- If this option is on, the dominant language of the document or selected text will determine the automatic selection of a text-to-speech voice for that language. Text-to-speech can be configured in System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > System Voice. If Auto-select is off, then one's selected voice in System Preferences is used.
Version 2.3
Expanded text-to-speech language support, improvements and a bug fix.
• Text-to-speech voice-language selection: If a document or selection to be spoken has a different dominant language than the voice selected in System Preferences on macOS, then a text-to-speech voice for that language will be automatically selected by the app. If the text language is the same as the user's language set in the macOS System Preferences, then the voice selected in System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech > System Voice is used.
• This automatic voice-language selection feature is also supported in the TelepaText companion app for iPhone or iPad. Both apps support iCloud for document storage synced between devices.
• Improved Tile Windows: If the number of windows to tile is less than grid spaces, the last window fills the remaining grid space.
• Enhanced In-App Purchase experience for Speech Commands module.
• Fixed bug in smooth scrolling during speak action.

• Minor bug fix.
Version 2.2
New support for Markdown: Three new actions in the Edit menu convert the current Markdown text document or selection.
- Markdown: View as formatted text. The current font and colors of the text view are used for the Markdown view.
- Copy Markdown as HTML: Copy to the pasteboard as HTML. This can be pasted into the body section of an existing HTML document, using the existing style (font and colors) of the HTML document.
- Copy Markdown as HTML page: Copy to the pasteboard as an entire HTML page with a head section and stylesheet using the existing style (font and colors) of the TelepaText view.
Markdown support is supported in both the iPhone/iPad and macOS versions of TelepaText.
Keyboard shortcuts:
- Markdown - Shift-Command ⇧⌘ N
- Copy Markdown as HTML - Option-Command ⌥⌘ C
- Copy Markdown as HTML Page - Control-Command ⌃⌘ C

This option lets one see paragraphs more easily, and eliminates the need for two Return characters between paragraphs to create a blank line visually.

• New speech command: [Evaluate | calculate] [text | selection]
The selected text is evaluated and the result displayed.
• New speech commands: [Show | display] [Word Usage | Word Types]

* Speech Commands are an In-App Purchase
Version 2.1.3
• Added Reveal in Finder in contextual menu for items in the Documents listing. Control-click or two-finger tap a document in the Documents listing to open the contextual menu.
• If the Documents panels is opened or closed and the "Tile windows upon opening" option is on in Preferences, the the currently open document windows will be tiled.
• Window tiling is animated if there are six or fewer document windows open. If more than six documents, windows will be tiling instantly with no animation.
