Version 2.23.0
Speak News gets a useful new feature and a bug fix:
- New option in Speak News app Settings view: "Maximum items per feed".
This determines how many items to save in the app's cache for each RSS feed. Previously, this was a fixed internal value of 80. Small numbers (30 items for example) will allow the app to operate faster, while larger numbers (80+) provide more news items in the app's cache for later viewing offline, also helpful if one wishes to keep track of older stories. The number of items in the cache can be larger than the number of items provided in a given reload of a feed, hence giving one access to older stories no longer in the active feed.
- Bug fix to improve the behavior of the "Hide toolbars when speaking" option in Settings.
Version 2.22.0
Speak News enhances the presentation of news and web page text to minimize distractions while reading:
"Hide toolsbars when speaking" is a new option in the Speech Behavior section of the Settings view. When this option is on, the navigation bar at the top and the toolbar at the bottom will automatically hide when using the Speak action, or when two-finger tapping an article to start text-to-speech, and when choosing the Smooth Scroll action in the Share activities view.
- Single finger tap to stop the text-to-speech or smooth scroll action and make the navigation bar and toolbar visible again.
- The toolbars will also reappear when one swipes right from the left edge of the News view to return to the Bookmarks view.
- Speak News supports both modern and older devices, devices running iOS 9.3 through iOS 16 or later.

Note: One way to add a bookmark to Speak News for an RSS feed or a web page is to use a custom URL. A custom URL for Speak News is just like a URL except the "https" at the beginning is replaced with "speaknews". For example: speaknews://www.imaja.com/speaknews/features.xml . If a "speaknews:" link is located in a text file, message or email, and the Speak News app is installed on that device, the link will be clickable and will open into Speak News and add that URL as a bookmark.

- Choose "Clean up cache". A bell tone will sound when the cache cleanup is completed. It takes a while, and only runs in the background while Speak News is the active app.
- The "Clean up cache" action takes place in the background without taking up too much processing power. Tap the Save Page icon button in the bottom row and a new bookmark will be created and loaded with the full text of the HTML web page. This is different from View Story or Speak Story which use the story excerpt (or full story) as contained in the RSS/Atom feed for the bookmark. Use this to read the full story right away, or to archive stories on the device for offline reading when not connected to the Internet.
- New support for special diacritical characters in natural language setup of bookmarks. This is handled for Google News, Twitter Search, and Wikipedia page names. This automatic encoding expands on Speak News capabilities.
- New custom URL support for basic search of the existing bookmark collection titles, and natural language phrase bookmark creation. Examples:
- This type of URL will open the bookmark found if the bookmark's title contains the specified phrase, such as "New York Times":
speaknews://New+York+Times

speaknews://Resumé+Wikipedia

Useful improvements and minor bug fixes: Speak News adds new story query bookmarks: "All stories" and "All stories in section". These new query bookmarks gather a collection of stories from other bookmarked feeds as they are updated, sorted with the most recent first. It's a great way to collect stories from one's various bookmarked feeds, for reading or listening with text-to-speech.
Speak News provides eyes-free listening to news feeds, Twitter feeds, Wikipedia pages, and web pages, and is great for listening to one's desired material while traveling, studying, researching and working.
How the "all stories" queries work:
- Use the phrase "all stories" as the title of a bookmark and the bookmark will aggregate recent stories from other bookmarks as they are loaded.
- The "all stories" query gets stories from all RSS and Atom feeds in the bookmarks collection, as they are updated. The query bookmark can be located anywhere in the bookmarks collection.
- To set the maximum number of story items for query bookmarks, open the Settings view and configure "Maximum items in queries" to the desired number.
- The "all stories in section" query bookmark gets stories from RSS and Atom feeds in the same section as the query bookmark itself. The query bookmark can be located anywhere in the desired section.
- Processing of queries has been optimized for better app responsiveness to user interaction.
- Improved text-to-speech for Google news feeds.
